Humanitarian Fund in Action - A First Hand Account
The following is a first hand account by Karen Marks, L.Ac., who went down to New Orleans with the AAC's help to do some community style acupuncture.
"During the week of November 20-27, 2005, I volunteered with Acupuncturists Without Borders (AWB) in New Orleans to help those impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Because it was questionable as to whether the residents basic needs were being met, I wondered if acupuncture would be effective or even wanted. I was eager to experience first hand the power of acupuncture in a disaster area. So I set off with these questions in mind... with high hopes of being able to lend a helping hand.
"During my time there...
We treated everyone; residents, relief workers, security guards, military personnel, even workers from the Portland Water Board in Oregon who had come down to help fix the sewage infrastructure. I was a bit surprised, I have to admit, and very pleased to see just how well acupuncture did fit in and benefit so many people. At the medical clinic in Algiers that we were invited to participate in by Common Ground, many residents who would not have experienced acupuncture otherwise were deeply touched by the medicine. Person after person told me stories of how acupuncture had helped their neighbor, sister, friend or even themselves. Word had spread that we were there and people were so thankful to be taken care of in such a unique way. It was wonderful for me to hear confirmation that AWB was providing a useful service."
